The Physical Structure of Stone Wool

Stone wool can hold up to 80-90% of its weight in water, allowing it to maintain nutrient solution while also providing excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging. Furthermore, stone wool’s super low cation exchange capacity (CEC) means that the nutrient solution remains the same as when it was mixed and doesn’t chemically interact with the stone wool. Instead of one or two major irrigation events each day, which can lead to over-saturating lesser growing mediums, plants are fed via multiple tiny ‘shots’ of high strength nutrient solution every half hour to hour during the lights-on cycle. This precise delivery of nutrient solution directly to the root zone helps to reduce wastage and evaporation. It also helps to ensure even distribution of nutrient solution throughout the block or slab.
Maintaining optimal moisture levels in stone wool using precision irrigation helps to prevent the risks of both under-watering and over-watering—the primary culprits when it comes to abiotic plant stress, poor growth and disease.

Large pots of coir or peat-based potting mixes, even when amended with perlite or other porous materials, often run the risk of excessive moisture levels at the bottom of pots.
